The Whitecaps fell to 2-3 on the season.

Lake County roughed up West Michigan lefthander Eudis Idrogo, who was making his season debut on the mound. Idrogo surrendered four first-inning runs on five hits, and two more in the second inning.

The Whitecaps rallied in the third, pushing across two runs on a Lake County error off the bat of Will Maddox to make it a 6-3 Lake County lead.

After Lake County scored two more runs in the fourth and one in the eighth, West Michigan answered with an eighth-inning RBI single by Arvicent Perez.

The Whitecaps’ Brett Pirtle stroked a run-scoring single in the ninth inning, setting up the tying run at the plate in Will Allen, who grounded into the game’s only double play. A line out by Maddox closed the rally and ended the game.

Idrogo (0-1) took the loss for the Whitecaps, pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs.

Lake County reliever Cortland Cox (1-0) picked up his first win of the 2016 season, pitching four solid innings of one hit baseball, allowing only one earned run.

Derick Hill paced the Whitecaps offense with two of their six hits and three stolen bases.

Yonathan Mendoza led the Captains with a two-run single and shortstop Willi Castro chipped in with three hits to pace an 11 hit-performance for the Captains, who are now 4-2 on the season.
