The Captains have won five of six games against the Whitecaps this season, including an 8-1 decision on Wednesday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The Whitecaps, who have lost two in a row, are now 6-7 on the season. They will open a four-game home series against the Dayton Dragons on Thursday.

West Michigan managed only two hits and three base runners against Lake County.

The lone bright spot for the ‘Caps was designated hitter Will Maddox, who registered the teams’ only two hits – a single in the third inning, and an RBI-double in the fifth. The Whitecaps struck out 10 times in the ballgame.

Whitecaps starting pitcher Jordan Smith proved effective in his first start of 2016, tossing four innings of shutout baseball on just three hits, walking two and striking out one.

Reliever Jon Maciel (1-1) took over in the fifth inning for the Whitecaps and struggled, surrendering six runs and eight hits in two innings in taking the loss for West Michigan.
