The West Michigan Whitecaps used a late rally to defeat the Dayton Dragons 4-2 at home on Saturday afternoon.LSJ Logo incert

With the score 1-0 in favor of Dayton in the sixth inning, the Whitecaps scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. The rally was capped off with an RBI single from Jose Azocar that scored Brett Pirtle.

West Michigan added on to its lead in the bottom of the eighth inning when Will Maddox scored on a wild pitch and Azocar hit a sacrifice fly to score Will Allen.

Dayton scored on a leadoff home run in the ninth inning and had two runners on base before Whitecaps closer Josh Laxer struck out the final hitter to pick up his first save of the season.

Starting pitcher Beau Burrows went five innings for West Michigan, allowing only two hits and striking out six Dayton hitters.

The Whitecaps are now 9-7 on the season and will finish out their seven-game homestand on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Dayton in the series finale.
