Nationals 3, Tigers 2 – Former Tiger pitcher Max Scherzer struck out 20 Detroit batters to lead the Washington Nationals over the Tigers on Wednesday night.
Scherzer allowed two runs on six hits in a complete game effort for the Nationals.
Washington’s Daniel Murphy doubled and knocked in two runs while Danny Espinosa added a solo home run.
The Tigers were led by J.D. Martinez and Jose Iglesias with a home run each while Justin Upton had a double.
Detroit’s starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann took the loss against his former team, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings.
The Tigers are now 15-18 on the season, good for fourth place in the American League Central Division behind the Chicago White Sox.
Detroit will open a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles starting on Thursday night.
