Double 7s were good enough offensively for Fruitport’s varsity baseball team in their sweep of Lakes Eight Conference rival Ludington on Thursday, 7-1 and 7-3. A little late-inning magic helped the Trojans out, as well.
In Game 1, starting pitcher Parker Tawney pitching seven solid innings, as he scattered six hits and fanned four. Connor Schuitema, Matt Sander, Jarod Wierengo and Casey Gagnon each had two hits to lead the Trojans’ offense.
In the nightcap, Fruitport was down to its last strike in the seventh, but the Trojans rallied with an RBI single from Gagnon and a go-ahead two-RBI single from Brendan Peterman.
Fruitport would add two more insurance runs in the inning to take a four-run lead.
Matt Sander, Tawney, Gagnon, Peterman, Jordan Gilbert and Tyler Newsted each reached base multiple times for Fruitport.
Pitcher Zac Miller came on in relief of starter Karson Kriger and picked up the win. Miller struck out four in three innings of work.
