And the Jayhawks answered the challenge in impressive fashion, sweeping Ancilla College 4-0 and 10-0 on their home field.

The victories gave the Jayhawks sole possession of second place in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association’s Western Division and a berth in Saturday’s state tournament in Lansing.

MCC wrapped up the regular season with a 36-12 overall record and a 20-8 conference mark.

The team will join Lansing Community College (the Western Conference champion) in the state tournament, along with Mott Community College and Oakland Community College, the top two teams from the Eastern Conference.

The winner will be the champion of the MCCAA.

The Jayhawks rode the arm of pitcher Morgan Engelsman in both games on Thursday.

She pitched a shutout in the opener, scattering three hits while striking out for and walking one.

Katie Hendrickson had two hits and two RBIs for MCC, Morgan Giddings added two hits while Kyla Dutcher added two hits and one RBI.

Engelsman also pitched the victory in Game 2, allowing three hits over four innings with two strikeouts and no walks.

Giddings had three hits for the Jayhawks while Bri Mairose collected two hits and three RBIs.
