West Michigan responded with a run in the fourth inning when Will Maddox brought David Gonzalez home with a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth inning, the Whitecaps tied the game at 2-2 after Leonardo Laffita scored on a Bowling Green wild pitch.

The Hot Rods scored three runs in the top of the seventh to pull ahead for good. Whitecaps reliever Jordan Smith (4-5) suffered his fifth loss, and third in his last three appearances, after allowing three runs (one earned) in three frames.

The Whitecaps fell to 40-33, and 1-5 in the second half.

West Michigan will host the third of the four-game series on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
