The Muskegon Community College volleyball team posted a 3-1 record in the 2016 Battle of the Dells Tournament over the weekend
at Justagame Sports Facility in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.
On Saturday MCC started off the tournament by beating Carl Sandburg Community College 3-1. Set scores were 25-12, 25-23, 25-19.
In the second match MCC played Des Moines Area Community College, the fifth-ranked team in the nation in preseason polls, and won 3-1 with set scores of 19-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-16.
On Sunday the Jayhawks opened with a 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-20, 25-7) over College of DuPage. They dropped their final match of the tournament 3-1 to Madison. Set scores were 16-25, 26-24, 17-25, 23-25.
Despite having more offense than Madison (53 kills compared to 45) the Jayhawks committed too many errors throughout the match and could not sustain momentum.
Ashley Schuitema led MCC with 54 kills while Rachel Brown added 37. Lindsey Jacobs had 148 assists,
In serving, Jacobs, Brown, Sammi Hockstra and Marissa Hassevoort each had five kills.
Hassevoort led the team with 63 digs while Brown had 13 blocks.
