Usually a tie has very little value for any team in any sport.

But the Spring Lake soccer team was more than happy to settle for a 0-0 overtime tie with Grand Rapidslsj-fb-logo Catholic Central Thursday night in an O-K Blue Conference showdown.

The Lakers came into the game with a one-game lead over GRCC in the conference standings. The tie means that Spring Lake now controls its own destiny in the championship race with five conference games remaining.

Spring Lake is now 6-0-1 in the conference while Grand Rapids Catholic is 5-1-1.

“To be honest, we sort of played for the tie in the two overtime periods, because we knew it would be in our interest,” said Spring Lake Coach Jeremy Thelen, whose team is 9-1-1 overall on the season. “Our defense played really well tonight.”

Spring Lake outshot GRCC 5-4. Laker goalkeeper Bruce Boes got the shutout, even though he wasn’t rewarded with a victory.

Thelen singled out defenders Charlie Parker, Ben Bouwhuis and Keaton Kual for their strong play in keeping Catholic off the board.
