Red Wings 2, Blues 1 (SO) – Henrik Zetterberg’s goal during the eighth round of the shootout led to a road win against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.
The Red Wings, who are 6-2 on the season, are now on a six-game winning streak and are in second place in the NHL’s Eastern Conference with 12 points in the standings.
St. Louis opened the scoring on a goal by Kevin Shattenkirk 2:31 into the second period.
Detroit responded with a shorthanded goal from newcomer Frans Nielsen at the 13:54 mark of the second period. Darren Helm and Alexey Marchenko notched assists on the tally.
The game remained tied throughout the rest of regulation and five-minute overtime.
Alexander Steen opened the shootout with a goal for the Blues.
The Red Wings tied the shootout in the second round on a Gustav Nyquist shot.
Detroit’s captain Zetterberg finally snapped the tie during the eighth round.
Red Wings’ goaltender Petr Mrazek picked up the win, stopping 31 of 32 shots during the regulation and overtime. He made seven of eight saves in the shootout period.
