The Fruitport soccer team had an exciting week in O-K Black Conference soccer action, posting its first victory in eight years over Mona Shores and fighting to a double-overtime tie with league- leading Grand Rapids Union.LSJ Logo incert

The Trojans downed Mona Shores 4-1 on Tuesday, evening the season series between the two teams. Zach Shane led the way with a three-goal hat trick for Fruitport. Logan Fielding and Liam Parker had assists on his first and third goals.

Fielding scored the other Trojan goal – which was the first of the game – with an assist from Kaleb Krueger.

Connor Werschem was outstanding in goal, making nine saves. Fruitport outshot the Sailors 15-8. Kaleb Krueger, Jonah Krueger. Caleb Yagger and Logan Tietsema were credited for solid defensive play.

On Thursday, Fruitport and Union traded goals through two halves and two overtime periods before setting for a 3-3 tie.

Fielding opened the scoring in the first half and gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Union tied the score about two minutes later and it was 1-1 at halftime.

Shane scored midway through the second half to put the Trojans up 2-1, then Union responded with a goal with about 13 minutes left that forced overtime.

Shane gave Fruitport a 3-2 lead with a goal in the first overtime, with an assist from Parker. Union once again answered, this time in the second overtime, leaving the final score deadlocked.

Union outshot the Trojans 24-11. Werschem once again stood tall in goal for Fruitport with 16 saves, while Jonah Krueger again stood out on defense.

Fruitport is now 9-7-1 overall on the season and 6-4-1 in the O-K Black.
