The West Michigan Lake Hawks kicked off their 2016-2017 ABA season on Sunday night with a 113-105 victory over the Oakland LSJ Logo incertCounty Cowboys at Reeths-Puffer High School.

West Michigan jumped out to a 30-26 lead after the first quarter and held a 57-50 edge at lakehawks logothe halftime buzzer. Marquis Brewer scored 20 of his 27 total points in the first half for the Lake Hawks.

The Lake Hawks outscored the Cowboys 56-53 in the second half to hold on for an opening night victory.

“These guys played extremely well and jelled as a unit tonight,” said West Michigan head coach Ron Jenkins. “Opening night was exciting. it was good to come out with a win in the first home game.”

Terry Walker Jr. – one of three returnees from last year’s team – had 21 points for West Michigan, while Deontae Hudson added 16.

The Lake Hawks will travel to play a new team in the league – Detroit Fast Forward – on Saturday, Nov. 19, before returning home the next day to host Team Network.

“I’m looking for these guys to take care of their bodies and just get back into the gym,” said Jenkins, about the 13-day layoff for his team. “We’ll just keep working on our craft.”
