The Muskegon Heights girls basketball squad opened its first Lakes 8 season with a 42-28 win over Orchard View on Friday night.

The Tigers trailed 17-13 at half and responded by holding the Cardinals to just 13 second half points.

Rhayshanique Anderson and Jakayla Anderson combined for 21 second half points as both finished with 15 points apiece for the Tigers, while Darnashia Day chipped in with 11 points.

The Cardinals were paced by Makayla Rennells with eight points while Janay Ferrell and Shaquelle Carr each scored six points.

REETHS-PUFFER 60, ZEELAND WEST 38 – The Rockets closed out the game with a strong 34-11 second half run to pull away from Zeeland West. Brooke Larabee paced Reeths-Puffer with 14 points while Delaney Bolles finished with 12.

KENT CITY 58, HOLTON 29 – The Eagles (2-2) were led by Zara Weber with 16 points, while Paige Mortensen added 12 and Mackenzie Mortensen chipped in with 11. Kent City jumped out to a 31-17 halftime lead.

ROCKFORD 57, MUSKEGON 40 – The Big Reds jumped out to a 13-8 lead after the first quarter, trailed 24-19 at halftime and had a 38-30 disadvantage heading into the fourth quarter.

MANISTEE 51, MUSKEGON CATHOLIC 20 – The Crusaders dug themselves an early hole by falling behind 18-2 after one quarter. MCC’s Lauren Doriot and Emily Rauch each had a big game on the boards, grabbing 16 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Rauch also led her team in scoring with six points. Grace Chandler paced Manistee with 14 points.
