Muskegon Community College’s women’s basketball team remained in second place and in contention for a league title following Wednesday’s 62-52 victory over Ancilla College.

The Jayhawks improved to 13-4 overall and 7-2 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association’s Western Conference.

MCC is a game behind conference leaders Kalamazoo Valley CC and Lake Michigan CC.

The Jayhawks surged out of the gates against Ancilla, grabbing a 14-4 first-quarter lead. Ancilla trimmed its deficit to 25-24 at the half, as it exposed the Jayhawks on the glass with 11 offensive rebounds.

But the Jayhawks came out re-energized in the third, outscoring Ancilla 17-10, and then sank some clutch free throws down the stretch in the fourth to ice the victory.

Bailey Freeland had a huge game for MCC with 24 points and five rebounds. Kalisa Williams added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists, despite facing double teams from Ancilla throughout the contest.

Haven Johnson contributed eight points and eight rebounds in the victory, while Jena’a Matthews led MCC with 10 rebounds and also scored five points.

MCC pays a visit to face rival Grand Rapids Community College on Friday, with tip off set for 5:30 p.m.
