The Grant boys basketball squad’s season came to an abrupt end on Monday in a 77-41 loss to Grand Rapids Catholic Central in a Class B regional semifinal game.

The Tigers trailed 23-14 after the first quarter, 43-26 at halftime and 58-33 heading into the final stanza.

Grant, which ended its season with an 18-6 record and won its second straight Class B district title last week, was led by Spencer Naffziger with 12 points while Carter Chase with nine.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central, which will play Spring Lake on Wednesday in the Class B regional finals at Sparta, was paced by Jacob Polakovich with a game-high 18 points.

“I thought we played really well and competed with them the first quarter,” said Grant Coach Matthew McCorkle. “We didn’t do our game plan and they separated themselves during the second quarter.

“It meant a lot to the players and the community winning a district title. This was my first year at Grant and they bought into my program and there is nothing more than you want as a coach than that.”
