The West Michigan Whitecaps were unable to overcome an early deficit in their 5-4 loss to Clinton on Tuesday at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park.

After four innings of play, the Whitecaps trailed 5-0.

But they didn’t go away, scoring two runs in the fifth when Blaise Salter singled home Cam Gibson and Jacob Robson scored on a pass ball.

The Whitecaps added two more in the eighth inning when Austin Athmann singled home Daniel Pinero and Anthony Pereira doubled home Athmann.

But that’s as close as West Michigan came.

Robson and Cole Baumi led the Whitecaps’ offense with two hits apiece.

Starting pitcher Kyle Funkhouser only lasted 2 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while waking three and striking out five.

West Michigan now sits at 15-10 overall and will look to bounce back in Game 2 of its three-game home series with Clinton at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday.
