A tough second half doomed the Shelby girls’ soccer team in a 7-1 loss to Big Rapids in a Division 3 district championship game on Saturday.

The game was scoreless at halftime, then Shelby lost starting sweeper Jillian Mitteer to a broken wrist about five minutes into the second half.

Big Rapids took control after that, plowing to a 5-0 lead over the next 20 minutes.

Shelby’s Amy England scored with about 16 minutes left, with an assist from Priscilla Salgado, to make the score 5-1. Big Rapids added two late goals.

The Tigers finished the season with a 10-11-1 record.
