For the past few years, Local Sports Journal has been making its weekly picks for high school football games.

But there was one projected winner for every game, based on one writer’s opinion. That’s no fun.

So this season we’re giving more LSJ staffers the chance to get in on the act. Six Local Sports Journal editors – Steve Gunn, Jason Goorman, Nate Thompson. Dave Hart, Andrew Johnson and Dave Tomczak, are all going to bravely pick winners for 15 area high school games every week, starting today.

This weekend’s season-opening games include a lot of interesting matchups, and the LSJ editors have some pretty interesting differences of opinion.

Mona Shores vs. Canton at the Big House? Three of us like the Sailors, and three think Canton will win.  Holton vs. Lake Michigan Catholic? Another dead split.

Four of us like Whitehall over Kelloggsville, but two disagree. Four think Reeths-Puffer will beat Grand Haven, despite the fact that the Rockets haven’t bested the Bucs in quite a long time.

Interestingly, all six LSJ prognosticators like Muskegon to beat a strong Ann Arbor Pioneer team, and we’re also unanimous about Montague defeating an always tough Reed City squad.

Check out the chart below to see everyone’s picks for every game this week.

The editor with the best record every week gets to write in this space the following week, to gloat and explain how much smarter he is than the rest of us. We will  keep track of overall records, to see who is really the smartest by the end of the season.

Do you disagree with any of our picks? Feel free to let us hear all about it on Facebook. In the meantime, enjoy Week 1 of the high school football season!
