Anibal Sanchez made a rehab start for the West Michigan Whitecaps on Thursday night and picked up the loss in a 3-1 loss to South Bend.

Sanchez surrendered three earned runs on five hits in four innings while Alfred Gutierrez pitched the final four innings, giving up two hits and striking out four.

Austin Athmann led the Whitecap offense with two hits while Danny Woodrow had the lone other West Michigan hit.

The Whitecaps are 88-44 overall on the year and 43-22 in the second half, three and a half games ahead of Fort Wayne for first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division second half standings.

West Michigan will play its final road game of the regular season in South Bend on Friday with first pitch at 7:35 p.m.
