The Muskegon Community College men’s basketball team broke open a close game with a late run on Saturday and defeated Lansing Community College 92-75 at home.

The Jayhawks led 21-13 in the first half before LCC rallied and cut the MCC lead to 45-44 at halftime.

The Jayhawks held a slim lead of 73-71 with about 5 1/2 minutes left in the game when Miguel Mahan hit a layup and free throw. That sparked a decisive 19-4 run that put the win on ice for MCC.

MCC is now 3-1 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference.

“I was really proud of those guys for the way we closed the game out today, especially on the defensive end,” said MCC Coach Jimmy Booth. “I thought we did a poor job defensively in the first half, and to our guys’ credit, they did a great job of executing the adjustments we made at halftime.”

Five different Jayhawks scored in double figures, led by Daryl Kirkland with 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Dequaveon Stuckey and Sergio Diaz both ended up with 18 points while Josh Smith chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.

Mahan finished with 10 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.
