Muskegon Community College entered the 2018 volleyball season ranked No. 20 in the nation and faced off with Kalamazoo Valley Community College to open its season on Wednesday.

The Jayhawks won in three-straight sets, topping the Cougars 25-11, 25-20 and 25-13.

The evenly distributed Jayhawks return six sophomores and have seven incoming freshman this season. Sophomores Julie Brown and Katie Veihl return for MCC after posting first-team all-conference campaigns a year ago.

Veihl led MCC in the season-opening win over KVCC with 29 assists and seven digs while Brown had seven kills and five blocks.

Alexis Issette had seven kills and two blocks, Jaren Smith had six kills and seven digs, Amber Jacobs had six kills and Maddie Heiss had four kills.

Shelby Rasch had two aces and eight digs while Kennedi Bernia had two aces and Amber Jacobs had 12 digs for MCC.

The Jayhawks host their home opener on Tuesday, August 28 against Lansing Community College for a 7  p.m. start.
