A three touchdown performance from quarterback Gavin Shafer helped propel the Whitehall football team to a 46-16 victory over Mason County Central in the West Michigan Conference opener for both teams on Thursday.

The Vikings started the scoring off early with two touchdowns in the first quarter to go up 13-0.

Whitehall tacked on four more touchdowns in the second quarter and led 40-0 at halftime, then added its final TD in the third.

Austin Hoffman scored a pair of touchdowns for Mason Count Central in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late for the Spartans.

Shafer completed 5 of 6 passes for 127 yards, including three touchdowns, for the Vikings. Kayleb Venema had 164 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.

Hoffman totaled 182 yards on 15 carries for the Spartans.

Whitehall, now 2-0, hosts Hart next Friday. Mason County Central, 0-2, will visit Montague.
