The Muskegon Lumberjacks continued their domination on Saturday with a 7-1 convincing win over the Madison Capitols at the Bob Suter Capitol Ice Arena in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first period and led 5-1 after two stanzas before closing the scoring with two third period tallies.
Muskegon is now 17-3 on the season, good for 34 points and first place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference. The Lumberjacks currently hold a 10-point lead over second place Central Illinois.
The Lumberjacks will finish their three-game road trip on Sunday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints, looking for the weekend sweep. The game is slated for 4:05 p.m. EST.
Muskegon opened the scoring with four unanswered first period goals from Danil Gushchin (:32), Alex Gaffney (8:48), Colby Bukes (11:08) and Oliver MacDonald (14:28) to take a 4-0 advantage at the first intermission.
The Capitols finally responded with a goal by Alex Mella at the 11:28 mark of the second period to cut their deficit to 4-1.
The Lumberjacks regained their four-goal advantage at 5-1 with a goal from Jagger Joshua 18:16 into the second period.
Bobby Lynch closed out the scoring for Muskegon with two goals during the third period at the 3:06 and 14:22 marks of the stanza.
The Lumberjacks outshot Madison by a 39-28 advantage.
Muskegon’s goaltender Brandon Bussi stopped 27 of 28 Capitol shots.
