Luke Mitchell tossed in 18 points, leading the Fruitport boys basketball team to an exciting 50-46 over traditional power Whitehall in non-league action on Tuesday.
Whitehall led 14-8 after one quarter and 26-23 at halftime, but Fruitport grabbed a 34-32 edge after three and hung on for the win.
Marcelo Conklin scored 10 points for Fruitport, which improved to 1-1 on the season. Ethan McKenzie had 17 points for Whitehall, which fell to 1-1.
MONTAGUE 70, WEST MICHIGAN AVIATION ACADEMY 56 – The Wildcats led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter and 33-31 at halftime, then opened up their lead in the second half.
Hunter Mosher led Montague with 18 points and eight rebounds while Peyton Burton followed with 17 points. Sebastian Archer had a team-high six assists.
RAVENNA 66, HESPERIA 20 – The Bulldogs had a 22-7 lead after one quarter, 43-14 at halftime and 62-19 after three.
Connor Kilbourne led the team with 21 points while Connor Schullo followed with 15. Jacob May had a team-high eight rebounds and added five points on the win.
Kaiden Robbins paced Hesperia with seven points while Jacob Klemundt had six.
The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 overall while Hesperia fell to 0-2.
NORTH MUSKEGON 59, MUSKEGON CATHOLIC 35 – The Norse led 36-16 at halftime and cruised to the non-league win.
DeShary Warren had 22 points for North Muskegon while TJ McKenzie had 16. John
Hayhurst had a team-high 13 rebounds. Jared Dugener paced MCC with 23 points.
North Muskegon improved to 3-0 while the Crusaders are 0-1.
COOPERSVILLE 61, KENT CITY 56 – Kent City overcame a five-point halftime deficit and led 39-28 after three quarters, but the Broncos stole the victory with a 23-17 edge in the fourth.
Kent City trailed by only three points with less than a minute left, but missed a 3-point attempt.
Coopersville had 13 3-pointers in the game, while the Eagles hurt themselves with missed layups and turnovers.
Brenden Geers had 22 points for Kent City while Max Hudson added 14.
GRANT 58, SHELBY 47 – The game was tied 9-9 after one quarter, but Grant took a 30-20 lead at halftime and had a 43-32 edge after three.
Grant sank six 3-pointers in the pivotal second quarter.
Tyler Schouten paced Shelby with 18 points while Tristan Landis added 10. Isaiah Frye had nine rebounds and Jarrett Furman totaled five assists.
Shelby falls to 0-3 overall. Grant is 1-0.
FREMONT 45, LUDINGTON 35 – The Packers built an 18-point lead through three quarters. Ludington cut the lead in the fourth, but free throws secured the win for Fremont.
Carter Moon led the Packers with 13 points while Calvin Miller had 11. Ludington’s Josh Laman finished with 10 points.
Fremont and Ludington are both 1-1 on the season.
SPRING LAKE 60, MUSKEGON HEIGHTS 50 – The Lakers led 20-18 at halftime, then gained their edge with a 22-15 advantage in the third quarter.
Lucas Lyyski led the Lakers with 17 points,10 rebounds and a thunderous third quarter dunk. Sam Negen added 12 points while Cayden Ball fought through foul trouble to score nine.
Zach Keyser pulled down six rebounds for Spring Lake, which is 1-0. Muskegon Heights fell to 0-2.
