The Western Michigan Christian girls basketball squad used a strong opening quarter and a solid second half to top Grandville Calvin Christian, 55-48 on Tuesday.
Warrior sophomore Taylor Folkema scored 10 of her 21 points in the first quarter to lead WMC to a 19-10 edge. WMC (1-0) tripped up in the second quarter and was outscored 16-2 and trailed 26-21 at halftime.
WMC responded in the second half with a 20-12 third-quarter run and outscored the Squires 14-10 in the fourth.
Jenna Housekamp hit three second-half 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for WMC. Senior forward Anna Sytsema turned in 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Warriors were also led by Meghan Heiss with nine points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Folkema added seven rebounds and six steals for WMC.
