For the first time in franchise history the Muskegon Lumberjacks have clinched the top seed of the Eastern Conference of the USHL.

The Lumberjacks sealed this spot with three games remaining in the season after defeating the Madison Capitols 4-3 in overtime on Friday night at the Bob Suter Capitol Arena in Wisconsin.

Muskegon, which will travel to face the Green Bay Gamblers on Saturday, is now 39-16-4 for on the season which is good for 82 points in the standings.

The Capitols opened the scoring with a goal from Chase Brand at the 9:55 mark of the first period to take the 1-0 lead.

The Lumberjacks tied the game 1-1 on a Jagger Joshua power play tally 11:44 into the first period before Madison regained its lead at the 15:41 mark of the opening stanza with a Alex Mella goal.

Muskegon grabbed its first lead of the night at 3-2 with a pair of second period power play goals from Ryan Savage (14:19) and Nolan Sullivan (16:26).

Madison managed to tie the game and force overtime with just 1:17 remaining in regulation with a power play tally by Kalle Eriksson.

The Lumberjacks sealed the victory and the regular season Eastern Conference title with a goal from Alex Yakovenko 3:17 into the extra stanza.

Muskegon went a successful 3-for-5 on the power play while the Capitols scored one goal time on six man advantages.

The Lumberjacks outshot the Capitols by a 35-30 margin.

Brandon Bussi picked up the win in net for Muskegon, stopping 27 of 30 shots.
