The West Michigan Whitecaps were held to three hits on Friday in a 4-0 road loss at South Bend.
In the second inning, South Bend scored the first run of the game when Tyler Durna scored on a Rafael Narea bunt single.
In the third inning, D.J. Artis scored on a Delvin Zinn single giving South Bend a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Cole Roederer scored on a wild pitch and Jonathan Sierra scored on a Durna RBI groundout making the score 4-0.
John Valente, Ulrich Bojarski and Wenceel Perez all had one hit to lead the Whitecaps offense on Friday.
Starting pitcher Hugh Smith took the loss in his season debut, allowing four runs on four hits while also waling four and striking out three over 2 and 2/3 innings.
The Whitecaps are now 18-29 on the season and 12 games behind Great Lakes for first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division.
On Saturday the two teams will continue their series with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
