The Pentwater boys golf team won a regional championship last week while two other teams and one individual from the Muskegon area also qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals.

Pentwater won the Division 4 regional championship at Muskegon Country Club, finishing with a team score of 334. The Falcons inched out Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart (338) and Western Michigan Christian (345).

Gannon McDonough paced Pentwater with a score of 79, which was good for a second place tie in the individual standings. Will Kolenda finished eighth overall with a score of 82. Rounding out the Pentwater scores were Seth Matulis, who shot an 86 and finished 12th, Drew Kolenda, who shot an 87 and finished 14th, and Mackenzie Breitner, who shot a 91 and finished 19th.

Western Michigan Christian, with its third-place finish, also qualified for the state finals.

WMC’s Daniel Vanbiesbrouck tied for second overall in the individual standings with a score of 79 while Caleb Minasian finished 16th with an 88.

In Division 2, Spring Lake finished third in the regional at the Gaylord Golf Club with a score of 318, behind champion Forest Hills Northern (307) and Forest Hills Eastern (311). The Lakers qualified as a team for the state finals.

Nick Krueger led Spring Lake by shooting a 72 and finishing second in the individual competition. Evan McDermott finished 11th with a score of 79. Chance Fry was 21st with an 82, Evan Schock finished 30th with an 85, and Jack Ogden was 36th with a score of 87.

Cole Eilers of Montague was the lone individual state qualifier from the Muskegon area, finishing sixth overall with a score of 76 at the Division 3 regional at Pigeon Creek Golf Course in West Olive.

The MHSAA golf finals will be June 7-8. The Division 2 finals will be at Forest Akers West at Michigan State University, Division 3 will be at Katke Golf Course at Ferris State University and Division 4 will be at The Meadows Golf Course at Grand Valley State University.
