The Spring Lake softball team’s tremendous season ended with a 3-1 loss to Stevensville Lakeshore in the Division 2 state quarterfinals in Battle Creek on Tuesday.

The game was a pitching duel between Spring Lake’s Leah Vaughan and Lakeshore’s Gianna Kerschbaum. The game was scoreless through five innings, then the Lancers broke through in the top of the sixth with a lead-off double. a sacrifice bunt and a suicide squeeze to take a 1-0 lead. Lakeshore added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a two-out double.

Spring Lake senior slugger Jenna Core led off the bottom of the seventh with her 12th home run of the season and 37th of her career to make the score 3-1. Molly Poole followed with a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Lakeshore made a pitching change and the Lakers went down in order to end the game.

Vaughan finished with eight strikeouts for Spring Lake while scattering seven hits. Spring Lake managed only three hits and struck out 13 times. Core had two hits while Vaughan got the other.

Spring Lake finished with a 34-5 record, an O-K Blue Conference championship and Division 2 district and regional titles.
