The West Michigan Whitecaps won for the first time in the second half of their season, defeating Dayton 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Juan Martinez of Dayton hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning to give Dayton a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Hector Martinez doubled home Zach Malis to tie the game at 1-1.

West Michigan then took a lead in the sixth inning when Nick Quintana hit a solo home run, making the score 2-1.

In the eighth inning Quintana singled to center to score Wenceel Perez, giving the Whitecaps a 3-1 lead which was ultimately the final score.

Quintana led the Whitecaps with three hits and two RBIs in thegame while Martinez had one hit and one RBI.

Whitecaps starting pitcher Brad Bass took a no-decision, allowing one run on four hits and striking out four over five innings. Reliever Chance Kirby picked up the win, striking out three and walking one over three innings of work.

The Whitecaps are now 22-52 overall and 1-4 in the second half, three games behind Lake County for first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division second half standings.

On Wednesday, the Whitecaps and Dayton will continue their series with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
