The West Michigan Whitecaps wrapped up the first half of their regular season on Sunday with a 4-3 home loss to South Bend.

With the loss, the Whitecaps finish the first half with a 21-48 overall record and in last place of the Midwest League Eastern Division first half standings.

On Sunday, the Whitecaps fell behind early when South Bend scored two runs in the top of the first inning.

In the sixth inning, West Michigan tied the game at 2-2 when Vinny Esposito and Wenceel Perez scored on a fielders choice and error by South Bend. Later in the inning, Christopher Proctor scored on a fielders choice to give the Whitecaps a 3-2 lead.

The Whitecap lead didn’t last long as South Bend scored two runs of their own in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead.

Esposito led the Whitecaps with two hits on the day while Ulrich Bojarski had the lone RBI for West Michigan.

Ulrich Bojarski will take part in the Midwest League All-Star game at South Bend on Tuesday while the Whitecaps will start the second half of their season at Lake County on Thursday night.
