The Muskegon Lumberjacks opened the 2019-20 season on Thursday morning at the USHL Fall Classic in Pittsburgh, PA.

The Lumberjacks did not start the season on a high note after falling to the Dubuque Fighting Saints 4-1 at the UPMC: Covestro Inovation Rink 2.

Muskegon is now 0-1 on the season and will look to earn a split in its two-game Fall Classic schedule with a win Friday against the Lincoln Stars. Faceoff is slated for 5 p.m. EST.

The Lumberjacks opened the scoring at the 6:24 mark of the first period on a goal from Christophe Fillion. AJ Hodges notched the lone assist.

Muskegon led 1-0 after the first period.

Dubuque responded by scoring three unanswered second period goals to take a 3-1 advantage heading into the third stanza.

Riese Gaber, Dylan Jackson and Matt Kopperud each scored a second period goal for the Fighting Saints.

The Fighting Saints closed out scoring with the lone third period goal at the 18:41 mark on an empty net tally by Mark Cheremeta.

Muskegon goaltender Jack Williams suffered the loss in net, stopping 24 of 27 shots.

The Fighting Saints outshot Muskegon by a 28-23 margin.
