Not so many years ago, Ralph Monday was a troubled kid on the streets of Los Angeles, flirting with a lifestyle that could have easily led to prison. Luckily he was a talented basketball player, which led him to college and eventually the West Michigan Lake Hawks, Muskegon’s ABA franchise.

Today Monday is the veteran leader of the Lake Hawks who has also carved a niche in his new community, working with troubled kids and less fortunate people in the Muskegon area. Check out the cover profile of Monday in the Jan. 22 edition of the Local Sports Journal magazine.

The edition also includes a profile of Mona Shores standout athlete Jaylen Hopson, who battled through a state championship football season following the unexpected death of his father last summer; a feature on Josh Cox, the talented multi-sport Ravenna athlete who keeps getting sidelined by frustrating injuries; and a look at Rhett Pitlick, the younger brother of former Muskegon Lumberjacks great Rem Pitlick, who recently joined the Jacks in a trade and is helping the team turn its season around.
