The Muskegon Community College women’s basketball team edged Kellogg Community College 67-62 on Wednesday and took sole possession of first place in the MCCAA Western Conference.

The Jayhawks started slow, allowing Kellogg to take an early 10-point lead. But MCC rebounded and led 16-15 at the first buzzer and 33-27 at halftime.

Kellogg led 46-45 after three quarters, but MCC pulled out the win with free throws down the stretch.

Yasmine Colon led the Jayhawks with 20 points and nine rebounds. Iyana Brown contributed 14 points and eight rebounds while Tierra Williams contributed 12 points and six boards.

MCC improved to 21-3 overall and 13-2 in conference play. The Jayhawks took sole possession of first place in the Western Conference because Mid-Michigan Community College lost to Jackson College.

The Jayhawks will return to action on Saturday at Grand Rapids Community College.
