The Muskegon Lumberjacks bounced back from last night’s home loss, with a 5-4 overtime shootout win on Saturday over the Madison Capitols at Bob Suter Arena in Madison, Wisconsin.
Tanner Kelly was the hero in the three-round shootout, scoring the lone goal to seal the win for the Lumberjacks.
The Lumberjacks are now 18-18-4 on the season, good for 40 points and fifth place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference standings.
Muskegon will return to action Sunday afternoon, visiting the first-place Chicago Steel. Faceoff is slated for 4:05 p.m. EST.
“That was two big points for us,” said Lumberjacks coach Mike Hamilton. “We had some good chances during overtime and late in the game, just like last night. It was nice to see us get rewarded at the end tonight.”
The Capitols opened the scoring 1:54 into the first period on a goal from Ryan Kirwan.
The Lumberjacks tied the game 1-1 with a shorthanded tally from Rhett Pitlick at the 8:58 mark of the first period.
Muskegon led 2-1 at the end of the opening period after Jack Williams scored for the Lumberjacks 14:59 into the first period.
Madison responded with a goal from Carson Bantle 5:23 into the second period, and Kirwan at the 7:53 mark, to give the Capitols a 3-2 advantage.
The Lumberjacks tied the game at 3-3 with a power play goal from Christophe Fillion 13:09 into the second period.
The Capitols responded with Bantle’s second goal of the game to take a 4-3 lead 17:54 into the second period.
The Lumberjacks tied the game 4-4 after a goal from Dylan Wendt at the 4:15 mark of the third period.
The game remained tied at the end of regulation, forcing a five-minute overtime period. Both teams failed to score, which forced a three-round shootout.
Muskegon outshot the Capitols by a 37-34 margin. Eric Green stopped 30 of 34 shots in net for the Lumberjacks.
Tyler Dunbar, Viktor Masilevich, Wendt and Danil Gushchin each had assists for Muskegon.
