Local Sports Journal’s reporters and photographers have been fanning out across the area over the past few weeks, gathering the information and photos we need for our annual high school football preview section.
To watch and listen to the pumped-up players as they work out, you would never know there was any doubt about the football season happening this year. They have been conditioning and practicing in the heat all summer, on the assumption that they will be allowed to play.
Will it happen? Nobody knows for sure. The Michigan High School Athletic Association is expected to make an announcement on or near Aug. 20, and the first games are scheduled for Aug. 27.
Despite the uncertainly, we at LSJ have been following the lead of the players and coaches and preparing the football preview section. We are selling mail-delivered copies as a crucial fundraiser this year, for a minimum donation of $5. Please fill out the online form below to order your copy!
We’re going to have a great preview section this year. The cover story features Brady Rose, the young backup quarterback who miraculously led Mona Shores to its very first state championship last year. We also feature the 2019 Orchard View Cardinals, who bounced back from a 2-7 record in 2018 and went undefeated in the regular season last fall.
And our course we will have season previews for all of the 22 local teams we cover.
Some have asked why we’re going through all the trouble of contacting coaches and talking to players, when they may not even play. There are several reasons.
Since the players and coaches are keeping the faith and working so hard, we want to show our solidarity. We’ve been covering their games and spotlighting their efforts for seven years, and we’re not going to stop now.
They aren’t quitting, so neither are we!
We also very much need the revenue from this fundraiser. In the past we gave away the football preview, thanks to the support of our awesome advertisers. But with spring and summer sports being cancelled, we had nothing to cover, so we couldn’t publish our monthly magazine or sell ads. In short, we lost a ton of money, and for a small budget, locally-owned business, that makes it difficult to survive.
