The Fremont football team lost 42-14 to Newaygo on Friday night in a season opening clash.

Payton Mansfield punched in a six-yard run to give the Packers a 6-0 lead with 8:37 left in the second quarter.

Newaygo scored with 4:23 left in the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead, which was ultimately the halftime score.

After falling behind 14-6, Fremont tied the game at 14-14 with 6:13 left in the third quarter when Mansfield scored on a seven-yard run.

Newaygo closed out the contest scoring the final 28 points of the game during the fourth quarter.

Mansfield led the Packers with 136 yards on 12-of-30 passing while also adding 118 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

Gabe Van Vleet led Fremont’s recevers with 47 yards on four catches while Adam Halasinski totaled 44 yards on two receptions.

Jacob Maier and Kam Hornof each had six and a half tackles to lead the Packers defensively.
