The state champion Western Michigan Christian soccer team downed Ludington 2-1 on Thursday in an early-season Lakes 8 Conference showdown between two powerful squads.

Lulo Mafahla led off the scoring for WMC with 27:30 left in the second half, with an assist by Ashton Leffring. Leffring broke a 1-1 tie with 16 minutes remaining, with an assist from Mafahla.

The Warriors won despite being outshot 13-6. Goalie Joey Eastway made 12 saves while Ethan VanOrman stopped a Ludington penalty kick.

WMC is now 2-0 overall and in the conference.
