The Mona Shores soccer team made it through the semifinal round of the Division 1 district tournament on Monday with an exciting 1-0 shootout victory over Grand Rapids Union at Grandville High School.

The Sailors and Red Hawks were scoreless through regulation and two overtime periods. The game went down to an OT shootout, with players from each team going one-on-one against the opposing goalkeeper.

The Sailors won the shootout 4-2. Scoring for Mona Shores were Hayden Yaros, Gavin Cheatum, Alex Eckerman and Ethan Brown.

Mona Shores goalkeeper Keegan DeKuiper got the shutout during regulation and the two regular overtime periods, then stopped one shot in the crucial shootout. Two Union players scored during the shootout while one shot hit the goalpost.

Tyler Leenhouts and Jordan DeKuiper were credited with playing great defense for the Sailors throughout the contest.

Mona Shores now moves on to face Rockford in the district finals on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Grandville High School.
