The Spring Lake Lakers defeated formerly undefeated O-K Blue Conference rival Allendale 38-36 on Friday night.

Andrew VanWahlde kicked off the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Allendale responded with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to make the score 8-7 at the end of the first.

Following a field goal from Carter Ball and another Allendale touchdown in the second quarter, Spring Lake went on a run that included four straight touchdowns.

Quarterback Zach Mitchell threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Joel Westhoff which, followed by a 20-yard touchdown pass to Carter Sabo to give Spring Lake a 24-16 halftime lead.

On the first drive of the second half, Christian Folkert scored on a one-yard touchdown run to cap off a nine-play drive and give the Lakers a 31-16 lead.

On Allendale’s next possession they got near midfield before fumbling. Folkert returned the fumble 50-yards for his second touchdown of the game to give Spring Lake a 38-16 lead.

Allendale added another touchdown and conversion, to cut the Laker lead to 38-24 at the end of three quarters.

In the fourth, Allendale put up a valiant effort to come back with two touchdowns, but the Lakers stopped a two-point conversion attempt to hold on to a 38-36 lead.

Spring Lake put their faith in running back Steve Ready on their last drive and he delivered with 52-yards on eight carries to help run out the clock.

The win puts Spring Lake at 2-2 on the season and in the O-K Blue Conference. They’ll travel to Holland Christian next week for a conference clash.

Ready led the Lakers with 339 yards on 42 carries while Folkert added 30 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

VanWahlde also recorded 26 yards and a touchdown for the Laker offense while Mitchell threw for two touchdowns on 2-of-5 passing.

Alex Lee, Ty French, and RJ Lisman all had four tackles for Spring Lake while Folkert had a defensive touchdown on his fumble recovery.
