The Grand Haven boys basketball team opened its season with an exciting 66-59 victory over Holland West Ottawa on Friday in an O-K Red Conference matchup.

The teams battled to a 14-14 tie at the end of the first quarter. The Bucs took a lead in the second quarter, outscoring their opponents 15-9 to take a 29-23 edge into halftime. West Ottawa cut the lead to one at 45-44 heading into the fourth quarter before Grand Haven pulled away.

Nic Stump paced the Bucs with 18 points while Harrison Sorrelle just missed a double-double, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds. Owen Worthington chipped in with 13 points.

O-K BLUE

COOPERSVILLE 69, SPRING LAKE 44 — The Lakers began their season with a loss against O-K Blue Conference rival Coopersville.

The action started off close, with the Broncos taking a 17-15 lead at the end of the first quarter and 35-26 at halftime. Cooperville pulled away in the second half, taking a 51-37 lead after three quarters and outscoring Spring Lake by 11 points in the fourth.

Kaden George led the scoring effort for Spring Lake with 14 points. Porter Saunders followed with 10 points and Callum Saxe added six points and seven rebounds. 

LAKES 8

LUDINGTON 57, MANISTEE 28 – The Orioles dominated the first half, taking a 32-8 lead into halftime. Eleven of the 12 players on the Ludington roster scored in the game.

Peyton LaCombe paced the Orioles with 10 points and six rebounds while David Shillinger recorded nine points and four steals. Levi Laman led the way on the boards with seven rebounds.

Ludington improved to 1-1 overall and in Lakes 8 Conference play.

CSAA

KENT CITY 78, HESPERIA 17 – The Eagles improved their record to 2-0 with the conference victory.

Kent City jumped out to a quick 22-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

Hayden Carlson led the Eagles with 17 points, Kyler Larson added 14 and Adrian Arechiga scored 10.

Riley Taylor paced Hesperia with six points.

HOLTON 60, LAKEVIEW 26 – Aiden Poling had a big night, scoring 22 points with five assists and four rebounds – all in the first half – as the Red Devils improved to 2-0 on the season.

Holton led 21-11 after one quarter, 44-14 at halftime and 50-20 after three quarters.

Peyton Krantz led Lakeview (0-3) with nine points.

FREMONT 73, NEWAYGO 67 – Braiden McDonald’s monster double-double led the Packers to a comeback win over Newaygo on Friday.  

McDonald scored 34 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead Fremont, while Joshua Zerfas finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Lane Converse recorded nine points and four steals. 

The Packers trailed 21-12 after the first quarter and 38-32 at halftime. Fremont exploded offensively during the third quarter, scoring 31 points to take a 63-57 advantage heading into the fourth.

The Packers improved to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. 

WEST MICHIGAN D

PENTWATER 55, MARION 27 – The Falcons won their first West Michigan D Conference game of the season on Friday night.

Pentwater’s Khole Hofmann started the game strong, putting up eight first quarter points to propel the Falcons to a 16-8 advantage at the first buzzer.

The Falcons outscored Marion by a 12-2 margin during the second quarter to take a 28-10 lead at halftime. Pentwater maintained its advantage during the entire second half.

Hofmann led the Falcons with 18 points,14 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Tyler Plummer-Eisenlohr followed that up with 15 points of his own, along with six steals defensively. 

Pentwater is now 2-1 overall on the season and 1-1 in conference action.

NON-CONFERENCE

GR COVENANT CHRISTIAN 74, WESTERN MICHIGAN CHRISTIAN 44 – The Warriors trailed 15-13 after the first quarter, 33-22 at halftime and 54-40 through three quarters.

Michael Tencate led WMC with 16 points and six rebounds while Micah Terhaar added 11 points. Brekken Fairfield pulled down eight rebounds.

POTTERS HOUSE 45, MUSKEGON CATHOLIC CENTRAL 44 -The Crusaders lost a tight non-conference contest on Friday night.  

Muskegon Catholic led 14-6 after the opening quarter, 27-20 at halftime and 38-35 heading into the fourth.

The Crusaders were outscored by a 10-6 margin during the final stanza.

Tommy Kartes led the Crusaders with 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Jaden Johnson recorded nine points and seven rebounds. Max Price chipped in with nine points and four assists.  

Muskegon Catholic is 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in Lakes 8 play.
