The Shelby girls basketball team opened its season with an exciting 26-22 comeback victory over Mason County Central on Wednesday in West Michigan Conference action.

The score was close throughout the low-scoring game. The first quarter ended in a 4-4 tie, and Mason County led 10-4 at halftime and 15-8 at the end of three quarters. Shelby overcame its deficit and captured the win by scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Lauren Brown led the Tigers with seven points and six rebounds, with Ella Olmstead adding six points and six rebounds. Nyah Tyron had eight points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Spartans.

WHITE CLOUD 34, HESPERIA 25 – The Panthers stayed with the Indians throughout the game, but ended up dropping their season opener by nine points.

Hesperia trailed 8-5 after the opening quarter, tied the game 10-10 at halftime, and fell behind 18-16 to end the third.

Emmi Tinkham led the Hesperia girls with 10 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Emily Bayle added nine more rebounds, as well as four steals.

WEST MICHIGAN CONFERENCE

SHELBY 53, MASON COUNTY CENTRAL 37 – Joseph Hayes paced the Tigers to the season opening-victory with 16 points and nine rebounds, followed by Logan Claeys with 13 points and Bishop Lee with 10.

Shelby led 16-3 at the end of the first quarter, 30-18 at halftime, and 48-34 following the third.

WHITE CLOUD 59, HESPERIA 19 – Hesperia opened its season with a CSAA Silver Division loss to White Cloud on Wednesday. The Panthers trailed 21-3 after the first quarter, 38-6 at halftime, and 51-10 through three quarters.

Kile Pomeroy led the Hesperia boys with seven points on the night, while River Montague had eight rebounds.

WEST MICHIGAN D

BRETHREN 54, PENTWATER 37 – The Falcons trailed 11-8 after the opening quarter, 26-17 at halftime, and 40-27 at the end of the third.

Tyler Plummer-Eisenlohr led the Pentwater boys with 11 points while Khole Hoffman put up eight points while snagging 14 rebounds.

The Falcons are now 1-1 overall, with an 0-1 record in conference play.
