Mason County Eastern girls cross country team had a strong, consistent performance on Saturday and won the Pentwater Falcon Invitational.

While the Cardinals did not have a top 3 finisher, they did edge out Frankfort 31-33 for the team title.

The event was staged at the Golden Sands Golf Course in Mears.

Pentwater scored 86 points and was fourth in the team scoring, while Grand Rapids Union finished third with 74.

Freshman Lucy Shoup finished fourth to lead Mason County Eastern at 23:41.76. Sophomore Olivia Wing came in seventh with a time of 24:35.89. Another freshman, Isabella Gulembo, was the next Eastern girl to finish. She was 12th at 25:38.17. Senior Sydney Gage came in 15th with a time of 26:04.51.

Holton placed three runners in the top 10, led by junior Vanessa Peltoniemi who took third at 23:26.77, freshman Aubrey Goyings finished fifth in 24:20.64 and senior Cassandra Biot was sixth in 24:21.19. Holton did not field a full team so it did not receive a team score.

Pentwater junior Anna VanDuinen finished in 20th place at 27:15.97 and sophomore Abby Hughes was 22nd in 27:47.37.

Walkerville senior Julie Sheehy came in 21st with a time of 27:26.10. Fruitport Calvary Christian junior McKena Wilson took 11th place in 25:32.30, while freshman Ava Wilson was 13th in 25:38.43.

On the boys’ side, Mason County Eastern finished in second place behind meet champion Frankfort, 39-45, with Grand Rapids Union third and Pentwater fourth.

The Cardinals had the top two runners with junior Nate Wing first in 18:36.39 and senior Eli Shoup second in 18:48.55. Eastern sophomore Peter Hybza was 11th in 20:33.04.

Pentwater sophomore Abe VanDuinen finished seventh in 20:12.79 and his Falcon teammate, sophomore Mitchel Daniels, came in ninth with a time of 20:28.46.

Holton freshman Ryan Evartt was 30th with a time of 25:14.09.
