The Whitehall boys soccer team opened the MHSAA state tournament with a tight 1-0 Division 2 win over Fremont on Wednesday.

The Vikings snuck past Packers on a lone goal from Jack McDowell that was assisted by Kyren Bluhm.

Andon Palmer played phenomenal in the net for the Vikings, securing 14 saves and posting the shutout while the Packers’ goaltender Carter Miller made three saves.

The Vikings and Packers had plenty of opportunities in the first half but just could not capitalize going into halftime, 0-0.

Whitehall moves to 8-8-1 on the season and will host No. 7 state ranked Fruitport on Tuesday for the district semi-finals.

Fremont wrapped up its 2021 season with an overall record of 12-4-4.
