Kent City girls basketball picked up right from where it left off after last season’s Division 3 state finals appearance.

The Eagles travelled to Muskegon to face off against the Big Reds in Tuesday’s season opener and walked away with a 41-30 win.

The win no doubt puts a target on the backs of Kent City as the top team to beat in the greater Muskegon area.

Madelyn Geers tallied 20 points to lead Kent City which next heads to face Grant on Tuesday, December 7.

Jumping out to a 16-3 first-quarter lead, the Eagles led 24-16 by halftime. Kent City outscored the Big Reds 13-10 in the third quarter and played Muskegon even through a low-scoring fourth quarter.

Lexie Bowers also paced Kent City with 11 points while senior Emma Geers chipped in eight points.

McKynna Sims led Muskegon with 11 points, Iyanna Brooks pulled down eight rebounds and added six points while Alayna Hussey had four points and two assists.

Muskegon next hosts Kalamazoo Central on Thursday with a 7 p.m. tipoff.
