An early flurry of baskets set the tone for the rest of the game in North Muskegon boys basketball’s 53-23 win over Muskegon Catholic on Tuesday.

Thanks to strong defense and the Norse converting steals to baskets early, the team was able to build a 17-5 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Troy McManus scored a game-high 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had three assists to lead North Muskegon.

Jason Bogue and Sam Gallo each posted 10 points while Brandon Rypstra scored nine points. Ben Meyers chipped in four points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Crusaders were led by Brandon Gustin and Jaden Johnson with five points apiece and Dane Rutz chipped in four points.

North Muskegon moves to 1-0 on the season and will open conference play on Friday at Shelby.

Muskegon Catholic starts the season 0-1 and will travel to Manistee on Friday.
