LUDINGTON — Bouncing back after a season opening overtime loss to Reeths-Puffer, the Ludington boys basketball team defeated Western Michigan Christian, 81-42 in a Lakes 8 Activities game Friday night at home.

The Orioles exploded out to a 23-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. They outscored the Warriors, 25-14 in the second period and held a convincing 48-16 halftime lead.

A 20-12 third quarter sent the Orioles into the fourth quarter with a 68-28 bulge. WMC outscored the Orioles, 14-13 in the final eight minutes.

“We knew Western Michigan Christian was without their big gun, and we knew that they don’t have their normal depth,” Ludington head coach Thad Shank said.

“So, we just went out and tried to make it a track meet tonight, and use our depth. It worked fairly well for us tonight.”

Peyton LaCombe had 25 points to lead the Orioles, David Schillinger added 18 and Nathan Gilchrist finished with eight points.

For WMC, they were led by Sam Liggett who scored 19 points.

Ludington is home for a non-conference game with Benzie Central next Tuesday. WMC (0-2) is scheduled to host Muskegon Heights next Thursday.
