NEWAYGO — Newaygo’s girls basketball team enjoyed home cooking Friday night when the Lions defeated the Grant Tigers, 48-24 for a CSAA Gold win.

The Lions built a substantial 28-9 lead at the end of the first half, and rolled into the fourth quarter with a 41-17 cushion.

“Great win by the girls tonight,” Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma said. “I thought our team defense was solid. Very proud of their effort and attitude.”

Emmerson Goodin paced the Lions with 14 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Jaxi Long also scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists. Lily Swinehart added nine points and nine rebounds.

The Lions improved their record to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference with its fifth straight win. Newaygo is next scheduled to play at Reed City on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Grant is now 5-4 overall and 5-3 in the conference. The Tigers are next scheduled to play at Big Rapids on Tuesday, Jan. 18.
