The Muskegon Lumberjacks stayed perfect in 2022 and overcame an early deficit to top Team USA 5-4 in Saturday’s New Year’s Day matchup.

Muskegon trailed 2-0 early, and fell behind 3-1 after the first period.

Ben Strinden tallied the Lumberjacks’ opening goal and kept the Jacks in the contest with his 13th goal of the season off a Quinn Hutson assist.

Hutson and Jake Richard lifted Muskegon late in the second period to tie the score 3-3. Hutson found the goal off assists from Strinden and Joey Larson while Richard scored his goal off the Hutson assist.

Muskegon let up in the third early on by allowing a Team USA goal and a 4-3 deficit.

But the Jacks responded with back-to-back goals a minute apart from Jacob Braccini and Phillip Tresca. The quick tallies came at the midway part of the third period.

Platon Zadorozhnyy posted the win in goal, stopping 19 of 20 shots. Zadorozhnyy replaced Alexander Kuleshov midway through the first after Muskegon fell behind 2-0 to start the contest.
