MONTAGUE — Montague battled for a 50-39 win against a Mason County Central’s girls basketball team that hung with the Wildcats throughout the first half.

A first quarter lead by Montague made it so the Spartans never could catch back up in the West Michigan Conference matchup.

The Wildcats used a 15-9 start in the first quarter to build a 27-21 lead at half. 

The Wildcats continued to maintain their lead at the end of the third, outscoring the Spartans, 12-10 for a 39-31 edge going into the fourth. Montague outscored the Spartans, 11-8 in the final eight minutes.

Kendall Osborne paced the Wildcats with 18 points. Claire Meacham added 14 points and eight rebounds.

For the Spartans it was Wren Nelson scoring 15 points and hauling down 10 rebounds, while Charlie Banks contributed nine points.

Montague improved its record to 9-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference second win in a row. The Wildcats are next scheduled to see action Tuesday, Feb. 1 at home against Grant.

The Spartans fell to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the WMC with their second straight loss. Next on the schedule for Mason County Central is Monday, Jan. 31 at home against White Cloud.
